Áine Ryan and Doris Devilly, Applied Language Teachers at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

In July 2000 Doris Devilly, and I participated in a course for third level teachers of German at the Institut für Internationale Kommunikation Düsseldorf. The course "Internet im Unterricht Deutsch als Fremdsprache" was a one-week intensive course with classes from 9.15 a.m. - 5.15 p.m. at the Heinrich-Heine University. From right: Áine and Doris in pursuit of cultural and paedagogical enlightenment with two friends in Düsseldorf. Firstly a few words about the IIK. The IIK operates from the Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf, and is associated with the Deutsch als Fremdsprache Department there. The Institut für Internationale Kommunikation offers various courses in Dozenten-Fortbildung e.g. Sommerkurse Wirtschaftsdeutsch, Top-Training Wirtschaftsdeutsch, Erlebte Landeskunde online und offline, Internet-Fortbildung. Courses range from one to four weeks in duration.

The course we completed included web page design/using Netscape Composer, using the www effectively as a research tool for the teaching of German, Internet projects for DaF. It was as a result of doing this course that Doris and I took the plunge when we returned home and started designing the web site for the German Department at NUIG. A dynamic group of experts runs the Internet Course at the IIK, they are friendly, extremely dedicated and hard working, full of enthusiasm and had unlimited patience with those who weren't exactly computer whizz-kids.

The after-course service that we have received from the IIK team has been second to none. We receive Info-Briefe every month and these contain excellent tips for teaching German at third level as well as specific information on Internet-Learning, Landeskunde and Wirtschaftsdeutsch. A chat room has been set up where we can communicate with course participants on matters concerning the teaching of German. In addition the tutors are available to answer any queries we may have. Doris and I have no hesitation in recommending the IIK highly. Funding is available for some teachers from the IIK. They offer one scholarship per course, as far as I know. You need to send them an Unterrichtstip which has worked well for you in class. More exact details can be obtained from

All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable week in Düsseldorf. Not only was the course great, but getting to know international colleagues proved to be an enriching experience. They were mainly German nationals teaching German abroad or at Fachhochschulen in Germany. There were also people from Poland, Lichtenstein, Belgium, USA and Russia. It was a wonderful forum for an exchange of ideas with colleagues teaching German around the world. And Düsseldorf as a city was very pleasant. Many interesting evenings were spent with classmates exploring the Düsseldorf Altstadt in pursuit of cultural and paedogical enlightenment. The Internet address for the IIK is
